(more weapon scores to be added, in addition to key bout results between top fencers)

Notes for defending NCAA champs Notre Dame (also some Stanford & Air Force notes) – ND men's foil records included 15-1 by Reggie Bentley, 11-0 by Enzo Castellani and Nicholas Crebs, 13-3 by Nick Kubik ... epee: James Kaull 10-3, Dale Purdy 10-2, Michael Rossi 11-4 and Jack Piasio 10-4 ... sabre: Jason Choy 10-0, Kevin Hassett 11-1, Keith Feldman 11-2, Alexander Coccia 10-2 and William Meckling 6-1 ... Bentley and Kaull were the only ND fencers at Air Force who were among the 2011 NCAA entrats on the ND title team (three of the six men's fencers on that team graduated, another is pursing Olympic bid, see below) ... Castellani was not among ND's NCAA entrants in 2011, but he was an NCAA semifinalist in '09 and '10 ...  Choy (5-0), Feldman (5-3) and Hassett (5-1) swept UC San Diego's Nick Bartuzik (a 2011 NCAA entrant) ... Meckling dropped a 5-1 bout vs. his twin brother, UCSD's Peter Meckling (the duo have trained at the Fencing Academy of Denver, where their coaches have included Tom Strzalkowski, a 3-time NCAA champ at Penn State) ... Coccia (5-2), Choy (5-2) and Feldman (5-1) also swept another fencer who qualified for the 2011 NCAAs, Air Force's Scott Pippin ...

Stanford's men's foil team was missing a couple top regulars – sophomore Turner Caldwell ('11 NCAA entrant; was competing in event overseas) and senior Alex Khoshnevissan – and the key matchups vs. ND came in epee, with the Cardinal going 6-3 vs. the Irish ... 2011 NCAA entrant Jake Harbour scored a noteworthy win over Kaull (5-3), also beating Rossi 5-2 but losing to Piasio (4-5) ... three-time NCAA entrant Kevin Mo compiled a 12-2 record that included wins over Piasio (5-3) and Rossi (5-2), plus a defensive battle vs. Kaull (who won 1-0 in OT) ... Kian Ameli won a 5-4 battle vs. Kaull, also beating Piasio (5-3) while losing to Dale Purdy (4-5) ... Stanford's top men's sabre returner, Jeremy Klepner, beat Coccia (5-3) and Feldman (5-4), with a 5-4 loss to Choy ... Choy was 3-0 vs. Stanford, Cocchia 1-2, Feldman 1-1 and Hassett 1-0 ... Stanford's leaders in wins during the day included Mo, foilist Jonathan Lee (13-5), sabreist Cameron Lindsay (14-4), women's foilist Lily McElwee (14-3), epeeists Katya Stavisky & Ashley Titan (11-4), and sabreist Julia Klepner (12-5) ... Air Force foilist Daniel Cohen is not competing this season in order to focus on his combat control specialization (similar to Navy SEALS) ... Cohen placed 6th at the 2009 NCAAs (w/ Duke) and was a 2011 NCAA semifinalist (w/ AFA); he still would have one year of eligibility remaining, should he opt to fence again in 2013 ...

Two former Notre Dame NCAA individual champions (both in foil) – senior Gerek Meinhardt ('10; '09 runner-up; injured in '11) and sophomore Ariel DeSmet – are not competing in college fencing this season, instead pursuing their bids to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Team (as is freshman foilist Race Impboden) ... ND senior women's epeeists Courtney Hurley ('11 NCAA champ; '09/'10 semifinalist) and Ewa Nelip ('09-'10 NCAA semifinalist, did not fence at ND in 2011) likewise are chasing their Olympic dreams, Hurley with Team USA and Nelip in her native Poland ... two ND alums, Hurley's sister Kelley ('08 Olympian) and women's sabreist Mariel Zagunis ('04 & '08 Olympic gold medalist) are hoping for another Olympic trip ... on the Stanford side, All-America epeeist Francesca Bassa is pursuing her own Olympic bid (she still has two years of eligibiity remaining with the Cardinal).
